Let Us Support the Work of the Kingdom.

“For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.” 3 John 7-8 (ESV)

The Church should support its workers. We have been called to be witnesses unto the ends of the earth, and in order to do that we must go into places that do not have local churches established. Our men and women called, then, to these places need means of support. They need to be able to focus on the task at hand of building the Kingdom of God rather than focusing on financial burdens that will prohibit them from their work. Established Churches, then, should seek to partner with those that are called out, so that together we may accomplish our great commission, which is exactly what Gaius and his church had done.

As Baptists, we have the privilege of working with other denominational partner churches in our cooperative program, which funds agencies that do exactly what John is praising here for missionaries all over North America and the world. Through our North American Mission Board and International Mission Board, missionaries are funded every day to do the work of the Kingdom. We are indeed privileged to be a part of such an incredible partnership. Other like-minded  denominations, undoubtedly, also have partnerships, reflecting the central truth of this passage: the Church of the living God should acknowledge His calling upon individuals and support them in their efforts whenever possible.

Are you giving to the Lord’s work? Are you tithing to your local church, enabling them, then, to give to other ministries? Are you partnering directly with persons or ministers working in proclaiming the gospel and building the Church? Challenge yourself in this new year to be more generous, especially to the work of the Kingdom, for in so doing you become a “fellow worker for the truth.”
