There is Now No Condemnation

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (ESV)

Christ changed everything! This sweet truth provides the underlying message of all of Romans, no more clearly communicated than in this climactic statement in the beginning of chapter 8. Paul begins with “therefore,” referencing all the material in the preceding chapters to proudly proclaim that now in Christ Jesus there is no condemnation. Of course, under the law, we were all condemned, as it revealed our unworthiness in light of God’s holiness. Now, however, that Christ has given us life instead of death and released us from the law through His perfect obedience, we are freed from condemnation because He was condemned.

Child of God, rejoice, in this truth today! The wrath of God has been satisfied. The fear of death has lost its sting. The bondage to sin that we had in depravity has been eternally loosened, for Christ has set us free. When you and I submit our lives to His Lordship, we are protected eternally, as Paul later points out:

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39 ESV).

Do you live in light of this truth? Do you live as if you are free? Are you filled with the joy that this news rightly demands? Far too many of us continue to live in condemnation of ourselves for failures when Christ has already overcome them. Do not diminish His great gift by living in defeat. Live today in the freedom of Romans 8:1!

I Am Not Condemned

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Rom 8:1 (NIV)

The Bible presents the bad news of condemnation for sin. We are born in sin and bear the marks of the sin nature that can be traced throughout our family tree all the way back to our beloved relative, Adam. Every human being is a descendant of Adam and has inherited Adam’s fallen nature. Because of sin the unregenerate have no future to look forward to except separation from God and eternal damnation in hell.

Thankfully, just as the Bible presents the bad news of condemnation for sin, it also presents the good news of salvation from sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 6:23 NIV). As a result of the gift of God provided to every child of God, the bad news of our sin is replaced with the good news of eternal life found in Jesus Christ.

When you come into union with Jesus Christ, you are blessed with the realities of that personal and eternal relationship. Your union with Christ generates some realities that profoundly impact your present and future.

Reality #1: In Christ, I am not condemned.

In Christ, you no longer operate your life under the cloud of shame and guilt. The penalty for your sin has been paid in full. “Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men” (Romans 5:18 NIV). You are no longer condemned. Jesus took your place by completing the atoning work on the cross for your sin. Don’t allow the enemy to drag you back under the cloud of condemnation. Since you are not condemned, you can remove the grave clothes. You have been brought from death to life!

Freedom

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)

What are you doing with the new life you have been given? As a child of God, your sin debt has been deleted, your name has been written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and your adoption has been completed. Satan is defeated! Jesus reigns!

Are you allowing Jesus to reign in your life? Are you living in light of your new identity in Christ? You are now free to live and express your God given potential. You are now free to share His love and shine His light. The shackles have been removed! Praise God!

There is now no condemnation! The righteousness of Christ has been deposited into your account. When God sees you He sees the righteousness of Christ. The operation of the Holy Spirit has set us free from the operation of sin and death. Now we are on shouting ground!

Carve out some time today to think through all that God has delivered you from. Spend a few moments praising Him for His deliverance. Bask in the reality of your relationship with our Heavenly Father. He is worthy! You are free!
