Let Your Light Shine

“And he said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’” Mark 4:21-23 (ESV)

The Kingdom of God is being established by the Church through the gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world. We, as God’s ambassadors, are proclaiming hope and purpose as a result of the cross, demanding the darkness of depravity to recede in the glory of the light of God’s beautiful revelation in Jesus. We are revealing God’s purpose for all things and calling creation to restoration, enabling all things to worship the Lord and give Him the glory that He alone is due!

In light of these profound truths, how could we ever consider keeping the light within us as a result of the Spirit’s regenerative work hidden? Why do we allow the darkness to demand authority over the light? When we walk into a room as God’s chosen people, that room should be lit by the joy in our hearts, demanding the hearts of those who have not responded to Christ’s sacrifice to consider the difference in our worldview and theirs.

We have been called to be witnesses, which should not be a hard thing given this image from Jesus. Witnessing should be a natural thing, in that any time light steps into darkness the difference is noticeable. This was certainly true of Jesus, the ultimate light, whose radiance in the midst of darkness changed the course of human history! Will you follow His example? Will you let your light shine and build the Kingdom of God today?

Shine Like Stars

“And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Matthew 2:9b-10 (ESV)

How did men so far away come to find the promised Messiah resting in a random house in the town of Bethlehem? Did they have some treasure map leading the way with clues, warning of imminent danger on their journey? Did they have scouts go before them and investigate what the local people had seen and/or heard about this special birth? No. They had a star. They had a marker placed by God, which led them beyond the snares of Herod and inside some seemingly unimportant house in Bethlehem to the fulfillment of their hopes and the object of their worship. They were undoubtedly aware of the promise and the prophecy regarding this deliverer and were searching for this proclaimed “king.” In their searching, though, they were given an aid, which we must ourselves be today.

We are the modern day stars of Bethlehem. For those who are searching, who have the promise of God sealed on their heart as they bare His image, we are to be the lights that lead them to where Christ is so that they may join with all creation in appropriate worship. We must shine and lead so that all the world may see the fulfillment of scripture and the arrival of our once and future king!

Are you shining as a light in darkness? Are you engaging those who are searching? Are you resting over where Christ is so that when people find you they may also find Him? May we be lights today; may we shine like stars to a world searching for Jesus.

Light of the World

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 (NIV)

Are you a recipient of the Light? When you turned from your sin and turned to Jesus alone for salvation, you became a child of God and a recipient of the Light of the World. Just as Jesus illuminated His world during His earthly ministry, He has called us and commissioned us to be the light of the world by continuing His ministry on the earth.

  • “There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.” John 1:6-9 (NIV)

Your role in this Christian life is to point people to Jesus. When others view your life, they should see Jesus. You may be the only Jesus others see. As Dr. Johnny Hunt says, “People in your community may not read the Bible, but they will read the gospel according to your life.” What are they reading?

Help others get delivered from darkness by introducing them to the Light of the World. Intercede for them and invest in them by navigating them through the journey of discovering the Light of the World. Let the light of Jesus shine through your life and love people to Jesus. There’s no higher calling than participating with God in His redemptive activity by shining His light and sharing His love.

Make Jesus Visible

“’You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’” Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

Let’s go light our world with the love of Jesus, the compassion of Jesus, the humility of Jesus, and the servitude of Jesus. Let’s go light our world by shining His light, sharing His love, mending broken hearts, extending personal touch ministry, serving the less fortunate, and encouraging the distraught. Let’s go light our world by practicing instant obedience, maintaining intimacy with God, loving what God loves, and hating what God hates.

Let’s go light our world by interceding for the lost, investing in lives of lost people, going public with our personal testimony, and giving financially to the Lord’s work. Let’s go light our world by making ourselves available for God’s use, being responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and living in light of eternity.

Make Jesus visible by declaring that lost people go to hell, proclaiming that saved people go to heaven, and clarifying that Jesus is the only way. Make Jesus visible by demonstrating that people matter to God and affirming that God is not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9).

Unless we reveal the light, others will be unable to receive the light. If they don’t receive the light, they will be unable to walk in the light. If they don’t walk in the light, they will be unable to reveal the light. Make Jesus visible!

Illuminating Your World

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 (NIV)

Everything changed on March 28, 1979, when I received God’s gift of eternal life. Jesus, the light of the world, took up residence in my heart and has illuminated my life both inwardly and outwardly. My ambitions, my desires, and my outlook took on a new perspective. The character of Christ has been daily formed in me. Throughout the years, His light has informed me of areas that need to be brought under His Lordship.

  • “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Eph 5:8 (NIV)
  • “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Col 1:13-14 (NIV)

Jesus wants to not only shine in you but also to shine through you. His light through your life alters the world around you. Every interaction becomes intentional. Each conversation becomes an opportunity to allow Jesus to shine His light through you. Just as light influences darkness, Jesus has saved you and set you apart to influence others. Because He is the light of the world, you are illuminated. Now, illuminate the environments that God places you in. Allow the light of Jesus to shine brightly through your life today. Eternity is at stake!

Reveal (2)

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matt 5:14-16 (NIV)

Uncover your candle.

Jesus has transformed your life so that you will become an agent of transformation in the world. Jesus has illuminated your life so that you will reflect His light and extend His love to a lost and dying world. As a child of God, you are the light of the world. God has strategically placed you in a dark culture in order to shine His light in you and through you. You are alive right now on purpose. You live, work, study, and play right where God has placed you to know Jesus and to make Him known.

Is your light shining? Is your candle burning brightly for the Lord? God has created people who need the light you have. God has brought them into your life and placed them in your sphere of influence so that you can let your light shine before them. Don’t fear the open doors God places before you. Don’t divert from the path God has placed you on. Don’t neglect crossing the bridges God has built for you.

You will come into contact with people today who need the light God has placed within you. Will you uncover the candle? Will you allow the light of Jesus to shine through you in order to reveal His love to others?
