“That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, ‘If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?'” Num 14:1-3 (NIV)

There is a consistent gravitational pull on our lives to go back to our old patterns. The children of Israel were satisfied with the status quo. They did not want to pursue all that God had in store for them. They wanted to bypass the miracles of God and His abiding presence in order to return to the familiarity of Egypt. Even though they were in bondage as slaves in Egypt, they desired to settle with the status quo and not do something great for God’s glory.

  • “Jesus replied, No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.'” Luke 9:62 (NIV)
  • “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:13-14 (NIV)

Don’t allow the status quo to keep you from doing something great for God’s glory. Push through the gravitational pull that seeks to lure you back into your comfort zone. Fix your gaze straight ahead. Focus your life on God’s agenda.
