The Greatest Commandment

“And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’” Matthew 22:37-40 (ESV)

Our complete affection for the Lord and devotion to Him should be our primary concern as disciples, knowing that only as we love Him completely can we truly walk as we were created to walk. We must seek to love the Lord fully with every part of our being; it is not enough to only give Him part for He is worthy of the whole. Once we have learned to love Him completely, allowing Him to satisfy our every need, then, according to Jesus, every other commandment will make sense. Our ability, then, to walk in obedience cannot be motivated by simple obligation; rather, our ability to walk in faithfulness is directly proportional to the type of affection we carry for the Lord. Further, our ability to love others as Christ loved them and commanded us to is only possible once we have learned to love the Lord fully. We can love others because of how He has loved us.

Do you love the Lord fully? Have you completely surrendered the entirety of your self to Him, forsaking other temporary pleasures for the great reward found in Him? If you have not learned to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, then the rest of discipleship is meaningless. Only when you have obeyed this greatest command can you truly walk forward as a sincere disciple and follower of Christ.

Grace and peace,

Be Still and Know

“Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. ‘Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’ The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah” Psalm 46:8-11 (ESV)

In the midst of the chaos of life, it is good for mankind to be still and recognize God’s ultimate control and plan for all things. We must continually stop and remind ourselves of our dependence upon Him and our responsibility to praise Him for His faithfulness, knowing that as we praise Him others will hear of His goodness and be blessed as they too look to Him alone for salvation.

In the church we often teach the need for a time of daily devotion, usually in the morning, wherein an individual studies the scriptures and reflects on their impact in his or her life. The purpose of this time, though, is more than simple obedience; it’s also preparation. If we do not take time to be still before the Lord, we will miss the Lord’s activity among the nations, seeing defeat instead of ultimate victory and complain or worry in situations where we should be praising. As we walk through our day, we will forget that the Lord is with us and is our mighty fortress and fail to give Him the glory for His provision.

The reality is that times of trouble will come. In being still before the Lord and reflecting upon His secure hold over our lives, we can truly hold onto the promise that He alone is our certain refuge and strength. Commit to be still before the Lord and know!

Grace and peace,

Follow Fully

“‘But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.’” Numbers 14:21-24 (ESV)

Tension mounted as the people of Israel grumbled against God and against Moses. God declared that none of those who despised God would see the land flowing with milk and honey. That would have been devastating news after all those years of wandering in the wilderness. God demonstrated that He does not bless disobedience.

Refreshingly, God affirmed His servant, Caleb. God affirmed that Caleb had a different spirit and that Caleb followed God fully. As a result, God promised to bring Caleb and His descendants into the land he had explored with Joshua. The Promised Land was Caleb’s inheritance.

Would God identify you as a fully devoted follower of Christ? Would your devotion to the Lord set you apart as a person with a different spirit? Take some time to take personal inventory of your life and your commitment to the Lord. Measure your motives and calculate your commitment to God’s Word and to God’s will. Are you fully devoted to the Lord?

In order to exhibit a different spirit, you must allow the Holy Spirit to have full control of your life. Yield to His prompting and allow Him to empower you to follow Jesus fully!
