Consider Your Ways

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.” Haggai 1:7-9 (ESV)

We must not neglect the building of God’s house in building our own. Haggai prophesied during the return of Israel back to their land of promise, in which they initially began to rebuild the Temple but stopped when opposition arose. While there was a stoppage of work on God’s house, the people of God began to focus on their own needs and desires, ultimately neglecting their original purpose for returning! They became so side-tracked with their own lives that they neglected the calling of God to build His house.

The same tragic oversight happens to many of us today. We become so consumed with building our own houses that we neglect the Church of God. We will spend time investing in our companies and in our families, which in and of themselves are not bad things, at the expense of our ultimate calling to grow the Kingdom of God through the gospel and His Church.

Let us remember that any success we have as a businessman or woman is meant to aid us in building the Church. Any success we have as a family is meant to put on display the gospel for those around us to see in order to build the Church. Everything we do is meant to glorify God by building His Church! Is that your focus? As Haggai challenges us in the text, we should consider our ways if it is not. Be purposeful today in building the house of God.
